Why we love this experience

• Natural Ecosystems:

  This safari moves through three of Uganda's most ecologically significant protected areas: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorilla population; Kibale Forest National Park, one of Africa's highest concentrations of primates; and Queen Elizabeth National Park, a vast savannah and wetland system straddling the Albertine Rift. The gorilla trekking itself is conducted under Uganda Wildlife Authority permits, which directly fund conservation of the Bwindi ecosystem. What distinguishes the Amatsiko approach is that it goes beyond wildlife — cultural encounters and community visits are woven into the itinerary, reflecting a view of conservation that includes people, not just protected land.

• Culture:

  The itinerary includes cultural exchange with local elders, traditional crafts such as basket weaving and mat-making, and a visit to the Batwa people — one of Uganda's oldest indigenous communities, whose ancestral connection to the Bwindi forest predates the national park itself. Travellers who have done this tour describe these cultural encounters as genuine and respectful, not staged. The experience does not treat culture as a stop on a checklist; it integrates it across the full eight days.

• Community:

  The economic model is transparent: tourism revenue stays within the Amatsiko ecosystem, supporting both the school and the local guides, drivers, and community members who make each tour possible.

• Participation:

  The itinerary includes hands-on cooking with women's groups and local families, organic farm experiences with planting and harvesting, beekeeping, and a cultural drumming and dance evening where guests join local musicians. The gorilla trek itself — which can take up to six hours through dense forest — asks something real of you physically and attentionally. You are not watching Uganda from a vehicle; you are moving through it, learning it, contributing to it.

• Rhythm:

  Eight days, maximum 10 participants, year-round availability with sensitivity to seasonal conditions. The pace alternates between early morning wildlife activity and slower afternoon cultural immersion — following the rhythms of the ecosystems and communities visited rather than a fixed tourist schedule. The depth of the itinerary means each place gets proper time.
