In a small kitchen in the heart of rural Rhodes, you'll roll up your sleeves and cook like a true local. Together, in a group of no more than 12, we prepare traditional recipes passed down through generations, all with fresh, local ingredients. After the cooking, we gather around the table and share the meal, stories, wine, and laughter, just like a real Greek family. This is not a class. It’s a celebration of taste, history, and togetherness.

Why we love this experience

  • Culture:

This is where the experience is strongest. The recipes come from yiayia — the grandmothers of Embonas — handed down through generations and still cooked as everyday food, not recreated for visitors. The setting is a small kitchen in a rural mountain village, not a culinary studio. Local wine is poured, stories are shared around the table. The framing the host uses is telling: this is not a class, it's a celebration. That distinction matters.

  • Community:

The experience is hosted by young locals who grew up in this community and are actively choosing to stay and invest in it. The meal happens in the village, the wine is local, and the gathering format — shared table, shared food — mirrors how this community actually lives. The economic benefit stays in Embonas rather than flowing to a coastal operator.

  • Participation:

You cook. Sleeves rolled up, hands in the dough, following recipes that have never been written down for tourists. The shared meal that follows is not a service — it is the natural conclusion of something you made together. Printed recipes to take home are a small but meaningful detail: the knowledge travels with you.

  • Rhythm:

Three to four hours, maximum 12 people, set in a village that sees a fraction of the tourist traffic that reaches the Rhodian coast. The pace follows the kitchen, not a schedule.

About the host

Mission

What drives us is a straightforward desire to share the real spirit of Rhodes, the part that lives far from the crowded coastline and tourist circuits.

Impact

Rhodian Roots operates from Embonas, a mountain village at the foot of Mount Attavyros, Rhodes' highest peak and one of its least-visited corners. By grounding our experiences in this inland, nature-conscious territory, we actively redirect travellers away from the island's most overtouristed areas. The cultural thread runs deep in each curated experiences.
