Discover a different side of Prague 5 through functionalist architecture, feminist history and public space. We’ll start with the striking 1930s Ženské domovy building, a former hostel created for working women, and explore its story from the outside. From there, we’ll trace the transformation of Smíchov and look at how gentrification, activism and urban planning intersect in the newly developed Smíchov City. Along the way, we’ll also uncover the stories behind some of Prague 5’s newest street names, dedicated to women and gender-nonconforming people. We’ll then take the metro for three stops to Jinonice to visit the Praho! Project’s powerful underpass installation focused on feminism, gender equality and emancipation. During the tour, we’ll also stop for a coffee break at Zrno Zrnko, where participants get 10% off sweets and drinks.

Why we love this experience
- Culture:
Averil's academic background in gender studies and her former role as a researcher, give the content real scholarly grounding. The tour also addresses a documented gap: there was no accessible, English-language feminist tour of Prague before this one. A take-home leaflet with a chronology of women's history extends the learning beyond the walk itself.
- Community:
Averil has built a small but intentional network of local partnerships. The bakery stop, Zrno Zrnko, is chosen specifically for its low-waste practices and social programmes; the accompanying leaflet recommends vegan and vegetarian spots alongside socially conscious businesses that employ people with disabilities or people transitioning out of incarceration. Two to three times a year, dedicated fundraiser walks channel proceeds directly to named Czech organisations: Consent, (sexual violence education), ASAP (reproductive justice), Profem (support for survivors of gender-based violence), and Praha je Feministická (a feminist urban advocacy collective).
- Participation:
The format goes beyond passive listening: quiz moments and guided peer conversations between stops invite participants to engage with each other, not just receive information. There are currently no direct visits to local stakeholders built into the route, though Averil has expressed openness to evolving the format in that direction.
About the host
Mission
Hi, I’m Averil! I’m French, I’ve been living in Prague since 2019, and my background is in gender studies, gender equality and human rights. When I moved here, I became fascinated by Czech women’s history but I was surprised by how difficult it was to find accessible information about it in English. I also started noticing whose stories were visible around the city, and whose were missing. Only around 5% of Prague streets named after people honour women, while traditional historical narratives still tend to focus on kings, generals and male political figures. That’s why I created Prague Feminist Tours. Through my walks, I bring women, queer people, activists and overlooked social movements back into Prague’s story. My aim is to make feminist history accessible, engaging and relevant and to help people leave seeing both Prague and history a little differently.
Impact
Prague Feminist Tours is a small independent project rooted in local research, feminist values and a love of sharing Prague beyond the usual tourist narratives. My tours bring together travellers, expats and people who live in Prague, creating space for conversation and connection. I also introduce participants to contemporary Czech feminist and LGBTQ+ organisations, campaigns, cultural projects and community spaces, so discovering the city can lead to discovering the people working to change it today. Since launching in August 2023, nearly 2,000 people have joined more than 200 tours. Through special fundraising walks, the project has also raised around 15,000 CZK for Czech NGOs. Prague Feminist Tours was a finalist in the Czech Social Impact Award in 2025 and shortlisted for the Czech SDGs Awards in 2026.
