Tertulia is a rural coliving in Italy where you can experience coliving stay (2-8 weeks) and coliving residency (3-6 months). Perfect for remote workers, creatives, or anyone craving to escape from city life to find focus, clarity, and community in the forests of Italy. Enjoy shared dinners, meaningful conversations, and the opportunity to learn about farming and permaculture.

Why we love this experience

  • Natural Ecosystems:

Tertulia sits inside the Apennine forest of Mugello, and the land is not just a setting — it is part of the system. Water is drawn from a mountain aquifer and returned through phytodepuration. Electricity is partially covered by a 5kW photovoltaic system. Winter heat comes from locally harvested wood managed to support forest health and carbon sequestration. The team plants trees and actively regenerates soil through agroforestry. Guests are invited into these practices, not simply surrounded by them.

  • Culture:

Francesco left Milan in 2005 to restore an abandoned hamlet and root himself in Mugello's rural traditions. The life at Tertulia is shaped by that choice: shared dinners cooked together, bread baking, weekly markets, and a deliberate pace that follows the rhythms of the land and the seasons. Guests are introduced to local neighbours, services, and the social fabric of the territory — not as tourists, but as temporary inhabitants learning how a place actually works.

  • Community:

Tertulia actively connects colivers with the wider Mugello community: local farmers' markets, trail maintenance projects, neighbours, and a growing network of former residents who chose to stay in the area. The biweekly potluck dinner brings colivers and local community members together around the same table. The project is formally constituted as a Società Agricola (Agricultural Company), grounding its regenerative intentions in a legal and economic structure rooted in the land.

  • Participation:

The minimum suggested stay is two weeks — long enough to move past the visitor mode and into something resembling genuine daily life. Guests cook shared dinners, join farm tasks on Tuesday mornings, and are invited to take active roles in the project based on their skills and interests. For longer stays, there is space to develop a personal contribution to Tertulia's own development. Nothing here is passive.

  • Rhythm:

The coliving follows the forest, not the city. Days are structured around nature's pace: morning tasks, focused work, shared meals, rest. Arrivals and departures are on Fridays or Saturdays to protect the community's weekly rhythm. Seasonal stays reveal a place changing over time — light shifting, plants evolving, the community renewing itself. A shared car and carpooling with neighbours address rural mobility without requiring every guest to arrive by private vehicle.

About the host

Mission

What drives us is the belief that rural places don't have to die, and that community is what keeps them alive. Tertulia is our attempt to prove that, by welcoming people into the rhythm of the land, not just offering them a place to stay.

Impact

The farm runs on permaculture principles, draws water from a mountain aquifer, and treats it through a phytodepuration system before returning it to the land. Weekly potluck dinners bring residents and local neighbours together around the same table. Every Tuesday, guests join real farming tasks alongside Francesco. Thursday trips to the local market connect people directly with Mugello producers. The community growing around Tertulia includes former residents who have chosen to stay in the area, a quiet signal that something here takes root.
